International conference on execution of judgements of the European Court of Human Rights organised by the Constitutional Court and the Supreme Court of Latvia

14.09.2023.

On 21 September, the Constitutional Court and the Supreme Court of the Republic of Latvia are organising an international conference “The Role of the Judiciary in Execution of Judgements of the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR)” with a view to strengthening the shared values within the European legal area and the dialogue between European courts. The conference is held in the framework of Latvia’s presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe.

Rulings of the ECtHR help to restore justice in those cases where human rights have been violated. At the same time, these rulings reveal the identity of a united Europe and defend our shared values: first and foremost, the rule of law, which is an inalienable prerequisite of democracy and protection of peace. Therefore, the discussion about the importance of execution of ECtHR’s rulings, which is an integral part of the right to a fair trial, will be of special importance at the conference. To reinforce the rule of law in Europe, participants of the conference will analyse the impact of national constitutional identities on execution of ECtHR’s judgements, reopening of legal proceedings following judgements by the ECtHR, and measures for supervising execution of ECtHR’s judgements.

The opening addresses at the Conference will be given by the President of the Constitutional Court Aldis Laviņš, the President of the Supreme Court Aigars Strupišs, and the Minister of Justice Inese Lībiņa-Egnere.

Presentations at the Conference will be given by:
