Information about Constitutional Court

 

The Constitutional Court is an independent institution of judicial power, which implements constitutional review. The Constitutional Court as an institution of judicial power fulfils its functions by administering justice. Unlike in other courts, the adjudication at the Constitutional Court is related to resolving disputes regarding the compliance of legal provisions with provisions of a higher legal force.

Strong and independent Constitutional Court is an indispensable element in the development of Latvia as a democratic state governed by the rule of law. The Constitutional Court, being the guardian of the Satversme, defends the fundamental values and freedoms of all individuals in Latvia.

The Constitutional Court, within the jurisdiction established by the Satversme of the Republic of Latvia and Constitutional Court Law, hears cases on the compliance of laws and other regulatory enactments with the Satversme, as well as other cases placed in its jurisdiction.

The procedure for appointing Judges to office, the structure and organisation of the Court is regulated by Constitutional Court Law.

The proceedings before the Constitutional Court comply with Constitutional Court in Law and Rules of Procedure of the Constitutional Court.
