Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš visits the Constitutional Court

Today, on 7 November, Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš visited the Constitutional Court. The Prime Minister and the delegation headed by him was welcomed at the Constitutional Court by President of the Constitutional Court Ineta Ziemele and Justices of the Constitutional Court: Aldis Laviņš, Gunārs Kusiņš, Daiga Rezevska, Jānis Neimanis, and Artūrs Kučs. During the meeting, the parties discussed current matters of the judicial power as well as issues related to effective, timely and transparent enforcement of the Constitutional Court’s judgements.

President of the Constitutional Court Ineta Ziemele opened the conversation by informing Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš about the reasons why the Court, for several successive years, was organising systemically meetings with representatives of all constitutional bodies of Latvia. She underscored that this dialogue was necessary so that the constitutional bodies would exercise the state power effectively in compliance with the principles of a democratic state governed by the rule of law.

Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš expressed appreciation of the work done by the Constitutional Court as well as of its initiative to hold meetings where the branches of the state power can discuss relevant issues in respectful dialogue.

Justices of the Constitutional Court and Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš discussed some aspect in the enforcement of the Constitutional Court’s judgements. The parties shared the opinion that more effective communication should be developed regarding the control over the enforcement of the Court’s judgements. Moreover, the Cabinet, within the limits of its competence, should inform society about the enforcement of judgements regularly.

Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš emphasised that the findings expressed in the Constitutional Court’s judgements were an important instrument to be taken into account not only in enforcing the particular judgement but also in the process of drafting new legal acts.

 At the end of the meeting, President of the Constitutional Court Ineta Ziemele thanked Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš and his delegation for the visit and presented to him a collection of the Court’s most important judgements, as well as the book that was published this year in cooperation with the official journal “Latvijas Vēstnesis”  – “The Satversme of the Republic of Latvia. The Constitutional Court’s Findings”.
