President of the State Raimonds Vējonis visits the Constitutional Court

Today, on 3 April, the State President Raimonds Vējonis and a delegation from the Chancery of the President of Latvia paid an official visit to the Constitutional Court. The State President and the Constitutional Court judges discussed the current issues in constitutional law in Latvia and focused on the execution of the Constitutional Court’s judgments.

The President of the Constitutional Court Ineta Ziemele, in connection with the most recent Constitutional Court judgments (in cases No 2018-10-0103; No 2018-08-03; No 2018-11-01), which, among other things, gained a lot of publicity, outlined several constitutional law issues of current importance, and pointed out the cases pending before the Court (No 2018-12-01; No 2018-14-01; No 2018-16-03; No 2018-13-03) which are expected to be decided soon.

The State President expressed appreciation of the Constitutional Court’s work and voiced support to the strengthening of its capacity. He stressed that a timely execution of the Constitutional Court judgments is one of the important elements in the functioning of Latvia as a democratic rule-of-law state.

Speaking of the timely execution of the Court’s judgments, the President of the Constitutional Court added that such execution would attest to the existence in Latvia of an appropriate legal culture and conform to the principle of mutual respect among the constitutional bodies.

The President of the State and the Constitutional Court judges agreed that the quality of legislative process needs to be improved, and the enhancement of the dialogue between different branches of state power continued, as it also in this dialogue that the appropriate legal culture is shaped.

In conclusion of the meeting, the President of the Constitutional Court informed the State President about the Constitutional Court’s initiatives to inform the public and educate the school youth, which are representative of how the Constitutional Court as one of Latvia’s constitutional bodies performs its functions in the wider context of democratic dialogue.
