President of the Constitutional Court Ineta Ziemele participates in the official event for opening the court’s year at the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg

Tomorrow, on 26 January, Ineta Ziemele, the President of the Constitutional Court, will participate in the official event held by the European Court of Human Rights (hereinafter – ECHR) to open the Court’s year in Strasbourg, France. In the framework of this event, an international seminar on the authority of the judiciary and the opening hearing of the current year of ECHR will be held. Ineta Ziemele will participate in the sitting of the association of former ECHR Judges, where the former Judges are given insight into the most recent case law of ECHR, and will also meet Ivars Pundurs, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Latvia at the Council of Europe (hereinafter – CoE).

This year the international seminar of ECHR is organised with the aim of highlighting the issues of the judiciary’s authority. During this event, Ineta Ziemele will have the possibility to participate in discussions, examining this topic from various vantage points. The challenges that the judiciary’s authority faces in the framework of the principle of separation of powers, as well as possible issues that can be identified in the context of the responsibility of courts and judges will be assessed. It is planned to discuss also possible recommendations for strengthening the authority of the judiciary both on the national and international level, by analysing communication strategies chosen by courts and identifying the possible internal activities of the judiciary.

The international seminar will be opened by the President of the ECHR, Judge Guido Raimondi and Paul Lemmens, Judge of ECHR, the chairman of the steering committee. An opening address will be given also by the Secretary General of the Council of Europe Thorbjørn Jagland.

The opening event of the Court’s year is a long-standing tradition; judges, higher officials, as well as experts of international law are invited to participate. Other participants from Latvia in this event will be Ivars Bičkovičs, the Chief Judge of the Supreme Court of Latvia, and Dace Mita, Judge of the Supreme Court.
