Kristīne Krūma has passed away

On Monday, 4 July, Kristīne Krūma, former Justice of the Constitutional Court, has unexpectedly passed away. She served as the Justice of the Constitutional Court from May 2007 until October 2015. After leaving the Justice’s office, she became the Prorector of the Riga Graduate School of Law and was recently elected Associate Professor.

Kristīne Krūma was born in 1974. After graduating from the Faculty of Law, University of Latvia she studied at Raoul Wallenberg Institute of the Lund University Faculty of Law, obtaining a master’s degree and later doctoral degree in international law.

Kristīne Krūma was not only the Justice of the Constitutional Court, but also ad hoc Judge at the European Court of Human Rights and Arbitrator of the OSCE Court of Conciliation and Arbitration. She also dedicated herself to the work of researcher, scholar and teacher. Many students of the University of Latvia and the Riga Graduate School of Law have been enriched and inspired by her wisdom, enthusiasm and knowledge.

Kristīne Krūma was active in numerous Latvian and international organizations. Her research resulted in many publications and several books on international and EU law.

Colleagues remember Kristīne Krūma as a competent and wise lawyer, a sympathetic, kind and good-hearted colleague.

The Constitutional Court mourns together with Kristīne Krūma’s family, friends and relatives.
