Justice of the Constitutional Court Ineta Ziemele receives the Award of the Cabinet of Ministers

_83U8509By the Order of 19 October 2016 by the Cabinet of Ministers No. 609 the Justice of the Constitutional Court, professor Ineta Ziemele has been awarded the Award of the Cabinet of Ministers for significant contribution to the development of the Latvian legal system, reinforcing democracy and the rule of law, as well as achievements in legal science.

Ineta Ziemele, through her integrity and high level knowledge, as well as creative and research work,  has contributed significantly to the legal system of the Republic of Latvia, in particular, to the protection of human rights.

Ineta Ziemele has contributed also to the development of legal science. She received her PhD degree from Cambridge University, the United Kingdom, her thesis was dedicated to “State Continuity and Citizenship in the Baltic States: Aspects of International and Constitutional Law”. Furthermore, Ineta Ziemele is the author of four monographs and has published numerous articles on issues of international law.

In addition to continuous work to raise her professional qualification by participating in various discussion fora in Latvia and in the world, Ineta Ziemele dedicates lots of time to teaching, lecturing to existing and future lawyers on issues of international law and human rights. Ineta Ziemele has been elected Professor at the Riga Graduate School of Law.

Ineta Ziemele has used her professional knowledge in projects of public importance. She has served on the  Commission of Strategic Analysis under the Auspices of the President of Latvia and the Committee of Experts on Constitutional Law established by the President. She has been an expert in numerous international projects, inter alia, has been a member of the European Commission E-heath expert group and group of EU experts on the Charter of Fundamental Rights.

Ineta Ziemele has represented the Republic of Latvia at high-level international institutions. In 2005 Ineta Ziemele was appointed to the office of the Judge of the European Court of Human Rights, but since 2012 has been the President of a Chamber of the European Court of Human Rights and the head of the committee on the status of ECHR Judges. Thus, Ineta Ziemele has contributed significantly not only to the development of the legal system if the Republic of Latvia, but also to international cooperation in the field of law.

On 14 April 2014 Ineta Ziemele was decorated with the 4t Class Order of Three Stars.

The Award by the Cabinet of Ministers has been established with the purpose of expressing the Government’s recognition for outstanding achievements in the fields of economy, science, education, health, environment protection, public administration, culture, sports, and national defense.

The award ceremony will be held on 17 November 2016 at Aula Magna of the University of Latvia.
