Election of the President of the Constitutional Court will be held

On Tuesday, 6 May, at 11:00, in the courtroom of the Constitutional Court, Riga, 1 J.Alunāna Str. the election of the President of the Constitutional Court will be held.  Aija Branta was the President of the Constitutional Court until 24 April; currently the Court is headed by the Vice-President Uldis Ķinis.

The election procedure

The President of the Constitutional Court is elected in secret ballot from among the Justices of the Constitutional Court.

The election is held at an open court sitting. The candidates for the position of the President are nominated during the court sitting. The candidate states, whether he or she agrees to be nominated.

The voting and counting of votes is organised by the Secretary of the court sitting. The counting of votes takes place in the presence of all members of the Court. The President is elected, if the candidate has received   the absolute majority of votes.

The term of office of the President is three years.
