Election of the President and the Vice-President of the Constitutional Court will be held

On Monday, 8 May, at 12:00, in the courtroom of the Constitutional Court in Riga, 1 Jura Alunāna Str., the election of the President and the Vice President of the Constitutional Court will be held.

The current President of the Constitutional Court is Aldis Laviņš. The Constitutional Court judge Uldis Ķinis was the Vice-President of the Constitutional Court until the expiry of his mandate on 31 March 2017.

The election procedure

Both the President and the Vice-President of the Constitutional Court are elected in secret ballot from among the judges of the Constitutional Court.

The election is held in an open court sitting. The candidates for the positions of the President and the Vice-President are nominated during the court sitting. Each candidate states whether he or she agrees to be nominated.

The voting is organised and the votes are counted by the Secretary of the court sitting. The counting of votes takes place in the presence of all members of the Court. After the votes have been counted, the chairperson of the court sitting announces the outcome of election. The President is considered elected if the candidate has received an absolute majority of votes. The same applies to the election of the Vice-President.

The President and the Vice-President of the Court are elected for three years.
