About the Court


The Constitutional Court is an independent institution of judicial power, which implements constitutional review. The Constitutional Court as an institution of judicial power fulfils its functions by administering justice. In difference to other courts, the essence of adjudication of justice at the Constitutional Court solving of special or specific disputes regarding the compliance of legal norms with norms of higher legal force.

The Constitutional Court, within the jurisdiction established by the Satversme of the Republic of Latvia and Constitutional Court Law, hears cases on the compliance of laws and other regulatory enactments with the Satversme, as well as other cases placed in its jurisdiction.

The procedure for appointing Justices to office, the structure and organisation of the Court is regulated by Constitutional Court Law.

The proceedings before the Constitutional Court comply with Constitutional Court in Law and Rules of Procedure of the Constitutional Court.
