03.02.2025.

On Friday, 7 February, at 10:00, the Constitutional Court will hold the seventh successive solemn hearing for closing the previous and opening the Court’s new judicial year. At the solemn hearing, the Constitutional Court looks back at the cases reviewed in the previous year and highlights the findings included in its rulings that are essential for the protection of fundamental rights, consolidation of democracy and the rule of law in Latvia. The report on the development of constitutional law and the work done by the Constitutional Court constitutes a direct link with the people of Latvia and, thus, reinforces trust in the judiciary.

“In the current geopolitical circumstances, issues that pertain to values that are essential for Latvia’s existence take a special place on the Constitutional Court’s agenda, i.e., protection of our national security, constitutional foundations, democracy, sustainability, as well as inclusive and respectful society,” Irēna Kucina, the President of the Constitutional Court, underscores.

Edgars Rinkēvičs, the President of Latvia, will address the solemn hearing. President of the Constitutional Court Irēna Kucina, in turn, will give a report on the development of constitutional law in Latvia in 2024. The guest of honour of the solemn hearing Guðni Th. Jóhannesson, the President of the Republic of Island (2016–2024) and Professor at the University of Island, will speak on the topic “History teaches us… Lessons of the past for our present turbulent times”.
