The Constitutional Court is organising an international conference dedicated to the role of constitutional courts in ensuring the resilience of the common European values

On 25 April, the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Latvia will hold a conference on the challenges to the resilience of the common European values that the European constitutional courts presently face. The possibilities for the constitutional courts to defend democracy in circumstances of geopolitical tensions, at the same time maintaining balance with human rights, will be analysed at the conference. The constitutional courts have special responsibility and task to defend a democratic constitutional State for the benefit of society.

The conference will comprise two panel sessions. The first session will be dedicated to the resilience of democracy and the rule of law, as well as the measures for protecting it, in the second session, in turn, participants will focus on specific challenges to fundamental rights. The opening addresses will be given by President of the Constitutional Court Irēna Kucina and Minister for Justice Inese Lībiņa-Egnere, as well as Acting President of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine Oleksandr Petryshyn and manager of the project “Support to development of the constitutional justice in Ukraine” Siuzanna Mnatsakanian.

The conference “The Role of Constitutional Courts in Ensuring the Resilience of Common European Values in Face of Contemporary Challenges” is held within the framework of the project “Support to development of the constitutional justice in Ukraine”, implemented within Phase III of the European Union and Council of Europe Joint Programme “Partnership for Good Governance”.
