Podcast Tversme latest episode released honouring de facto restoration of Latvia’s independence
On Thursday, 21 August, the Constitutional Court released a new episode of the podcast Tversme where the President of the Constitutional Court Irēna Kucina and Judge at the Court of Justice of the European Union Ineta Ziemele discuss statehood, freedom, security, and responsibility.
The judges both underline in their conversation that freedom is an experience the Latvian people have known throughout history, both as an opportunity and a loss. It has emerged through the battles for independence, the silence of deportations, the voices of the Awakening, and courageous choices, thus becoming a value that has grown out of people’s experiences and belief in the need to protect freedom. The judges also highlight that each generation must engage in a dialogue about responsibility towards oneself and one’s country. When people enjoy freedom and have access to equal opportunities, they develop a sense of security and confidence in the strength of their country. The strength of a country relies on the sense of responsibility that everyone contributes through their daily efforts.
It was also highlighted in the conversation that the rulings of the Constitutional Court play a crucial role in motivating society. There must always be at least one constitutional institution ready to take a stand for values and protect them at times when values and interests collide.
The episode is released to honour de facto restoration of Latvia’s independence.
On 21 August 1991, the Supreme Council of the Republic of Latvia adopted the constitutional law “On the Statehood of the Republic of Latvia”. The constitutional law fully restored the independence of the Republic of Latvia (de facto). Article 1 of the Law stipulates that Latvia is an independent, democratic republic wherein the sovereign power of the State of Latvia belongs to the people of Latvia and the statehood thereof is determined by the 15 February 1922 Constitution of the Republic of Latvia.
