Aldis Laviņš is elected as President of the Constitutional court of the Republic of Latvia

Today, on 10 March 2022, Justice Aldis Laviņš was elected as President Constitutional court of Latvia.

The election of the President was held remotely, via videoconference. The secret ballot was carried out by electronic means.

Statement by the elected President Justice Aldis Laviņš: “I express my gratitude to Justices of the Constitutional court for their trust and support. I am honoured to serve as the President of the Constitutional court. At this very moment when the freedom, democracy and rule of law is under attack in the heart of Europe, it is imperative to ensure that the laws continue to prevail thoroughly. The Constitutional court will pursue and maintain the judicial tradition, it has developed in the previous 25 years of its existence, with the aim to protect the values of a democratic state and to guarantee the rule of law”.

Election of the Constitutional Court’s Vice-President will be held today at 14.30 (EET). The Previous Vice-president of the Constitutional court was Justice Aldis Laviņš.
