Conference 2025

The role of constitutional courts in defending democracy and human rights in conditions of geopolitical tension will be discussed at an international conference

On Friday, 25 April, the international conference, organised by the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Latvia, will take place, focusing on shared challenges to the resilience of the common European values, currently faced by the European constitutional courts currently face. Constitutional courts have a special responsibility and task to defend a democratic constitutional State for the benefit of society.

President of the Constitutional Court Irēna Kucina underscores that the main common European value is democracy, with the rule of law as its backbone: “This international conference proves that international cooperation and values-based solidarity reinforces the ability to confront threats together. The conference is an important forum allowing constitutional courts, in conditions of geopolitical tension, to examine the self-defence measures that have been taken to protect the democratic order, maintaining balance with fundamental rights. The history and today’s realities confirm that each generation must reinforce anew those values that are the basis for democracy, including courts.”

The conference “The Role of Constitutional Courts in Ensuring the Resilience of Common European Values in Face of Contemporary Challenges” is held within the framework of the project “Support to development of the constitutional justice in Ukraine”, implemented within Phase III of the European Union and Council of Europe Joint Programme “Partnership for Good Governance”.

The Conference will be streamed in the YouTube channel of the Constitutional Court.
