Discussion about the challenges to democracy, justice, and equality on the latest episode of the podcast Tversme
On Friday, 18 July, the Constitutional Court is releasing a new episode of the podcast Tversme featuring as guests the former Justice of the Federal Constitutional Court of Germany and Professor at the Law Faculty at Humboldt University Berlin, Susanne Baer, and the Head of the Legal Department of the Constitutional Court, Kristaps Tamužs.
The episode was recorded on 25 April 2025 as part of the international conference “The Role of Constitutional Courts in Ensuring the Resilience of Common European Values in Face of Contemporary Challenges” organised by the Constitutional Court. Professor Susanne Baer joined the discussion on the possibilities for the constitutional courts to defend democracy in circumstances of geopolitical tensions, at the same time maintaining balance with human rights.
The latest episode of the podcast Tversme focuses on such topics as comparative constitutional law, the duties of a judge, the dialogue between constitutional courts and the Court of Justice of the European Union, the principles of dignity, equality, and good legislative practice, and also interdisciplinary gender studies.
In the episode, Professor Susanne Baer emphasises: “The Federal Constitutional Court of Germany views the parliamentary legislative process like a football game where the court is not meant to lead the game, but rather to defend the rules of the game and intervene only if the rules are broken. Sometimes it also means showing a red card.”
