President of the Constitutional Court Ms Irēna Kucina and German Ambassador Ms Gudrun Masloch discuss the dialogue between the constitutional courts of Latvia and Germany

Today, on July 14, the President of the Constitutional Court Ms Irēna Kucina met with the German Ambassador to Latvia Ms Gudrun Masloch. During the meeting, cooperation between the constitutional courts of the two countries was discussed.

The Parties discussed the cooperation between the Constitutional Court and the German Federal Constitutional Court, underlining the close dialogue based on a common understanding of the protection of democracy and the important role of constitutional courts in achieving this goal. On cooperation in strengthening the rule of law, the officials reaffirmed the need to continue a meaningful dialogue by promoting bilateral meetings between the judges of the constitutional courts of the two countries.

Ms Irēna Kucina, the President of the Constitutional Court, stated: “The dialogue between the constitutional courts of Latvia and Germany is a shining example of how the culture of the rule of law is being strengthened in the long term. Judges of the Constitutional Court and the German Federal Constitutional Court meet regularly at major international conferences and multilateral dialogue formats to discuss how constitutional courts assess the measures taken by countries to safeguard the democratic order while maintaining high standards of human rights protection. Cooperation and solidarity based on shared values are an essential basis for ensuring legal stability and resilience in the face of today’s threats.”

During the meeting, the President of the Constitutional Court, Ms Irēna Kucina, informed the Ambassador about the planned ceremonial sitting of the Constitutional Court, which would take place on 6 February 2026 on the occasion of the opening of the Court’s working year. The President of the German Federal Constitutional Court, Mr Stephan Harbarth, will be the guest of honour and will deliver a report. Ambassador Ms Gudrun Masloh was delighted to accept the invitation to participate in the formal sitting of the Constitutional Court.
