The Constitutional Court of Latvia and Uldis Mikuts, the Ambassador of Latvia in Moldova, discuss cooperation between the Constitutional Courts of Latvia and Moldova in strengthening the rule of law
Yesterday, on 24 January, Aldis Laviņš, the President of the Constitutional Court, Marika Laizāne-Jurkāne, the Head of the Court Administration and Kristaps Tamužs, the Head of the Legal Department, met with Uldis Mikuts, the Ambassador of Latvia in Moldova. During the meeting, cooperation and exchange of experience in strengthening the rule of law between the constitutional courts of the two countries was discussed.
Both sides highlighted in particular the results of the projects implemented by the Constitutional Court of Latvia and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to strengthen the capacity of the Constitutional Court of Moldova. Within the framework of the projects, the staff of the Constitutional Court of Latvia conducted webinars on the role of constitutional courts in a democratic state governed by the rule of law, the organisation of the court’s work, the case-law of the Constitutional Court of Latvia and other topical issues of constitutional law.
The Parties agreed on the importance of continued cooperation between the Constitutional Courts of the two countries in order to promote the protection of fundamental rights and strengthen the rule of law.
The President Aldis Laviņš briefed the Ambassador on the most important events and activities of the international cooperation of the Constitutional Court of Latvia. The President of the Constitutional Court highlighted the approval of the Constitutional Court of Latvia as a member of the Bureau of the World Conference on Constitutional Justice, where it will represent the interests of all European constitutional courts, as a particularly important topicality of international cooperation.
