Entry into office of Dr.iur. Jautrīte Briede as the Justice of the Constitutional Court

Today, on 1 September, Dr.iur. Jautrīte Briede, the Professor of the Faculty of Law of the University of Latvia entered office of the Constitutional Court’s Justice.

About the Constitutional Court’s Justice Jautrīte Briede

Jautrīte Briede was born on 17 September 1961.

Jautrīte Briede studied at the Faculty of Law of the University of Latvia. She received her Master’s Degree in Law in 1987 and became a Doctor of Law in 2004. She has furthered her professional knowledge by studying at the University of Birmingham and the University of Oxford (UK).

Since 2004, Jautrīte Briede served as a Senator of the Department of Administrative Cases of the Supreme Court Senate. In 2013, she was elected Professor at the Faculty of Law of the University of Latvia. From 1998 to 2000, she carried out the duties of assistant professor at the EuroFaculty of the University of Latvia. She has also worked at the Riga Graduate School of Law, the Ministry of State Reform, the Public Administration Reform Bureau, the State Human Rights Office and the Latvian School of Public Administration.

She has authored and co-authored two monographs, multiple commentaries on the Constitution and Administrative Procedure Law, as well as numerous scientific publications. Has published scientific research in Latvian, Greek, Ukrainian and German journals.

Jautrīte Briede was an ad hoc judge at the European Court of Human Rights. From 2017 to 2019, she served as a long-term expert in the Twinning project “Strengthening the Institutional Capacity of the Supreme Court of Ukraine in the Field of Human Rights Protection at the National Level”. She has worked as a short-term expert on various projects in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Ukraine, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Jautrīte Briede is a member of the Latvian Association of Administrative Judges and Transparency International Latvia (TI Latvia / Delna).

Jautrīte Briede has been awarded the Order of the Three Stars and the Second Class Honorary Badge of the Judicial System.

On 16 June 2022, Jautrīte Briede was appointed a Justice of the Constitutional Court. She took office on 1 September 2022.

Jautrīte Briede took the judge’s oath (solemn affirmation) in 2004 when she entered office of Senator of the Department of Administrative Cases of the Supreme Court Senate.
