25.04.2022.

Today, 25 April, the President of the Constitutional Court Aldis Laviņš and Vice-President Irēna Kucina met with Christian Heldt, the German Ambassador to Latvia. During the meeting, cooperation between the constitutional courts of the two countries in strengthening the rule of law and exchanging experience was discussed.

Aldis Laviņš, the President, highlighted “The legal cooperation between the constitutional courts of Latvia and Germany is strong and based on common values. Our courts need to continue the dialogue on strengthening democracy and the rule of law in the European Union. The rule of law is the only guarantee of democracy”.

Both Parties discussed the cooperation between the Constitutional Court and the Federal Constitutional Court of Germany, with particular emphasis on the continuity of the dialogue during the Covid-19 pandemic, when the Constitutional Court and the Federal Constitutional Court of Germany met for an experience exchange webinar. The Parties underlined that Latvia and Germany share the understanding of constitutional values and the constitutional role in protecting these values.

The Parties agreed that raising awareness of constitutional values among the public, in particular among young people, is important for strengthening democracy and the rule of law. At the same time, the Parties stressed that sustainability, the protection of fundamental rights and information technology are issues on the agendas of constitutional courts.

During the visit, Aldis Laviņš, the President, briefed the German Ambassador on the international events of the Constitutional Court planned for 2022, including the European Conference of Constitutional Courts to be held in Riga in September.

The German Ambassador to Latvia, Christian Helt, previously visited the Constitutional Court in 2021.
