11.03.2021.

On Thursday, 11 March, the Constitutional Court in cooperation with the Supreme Court of Latvia and the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) will run a webinar on the topic of “Role of the Constitutional Court in ensuring the conformity of national law with the EU law”. The webinar will be streamed live, in Latvian and English, on the Constitutional Court’s YouTube channel.

The purpose of the webinar is to discuss the most effective ways for the Constitutional Court and the Supreme Court to ensure protection of the applicants’ rights in line with both the European Union law and the specific scope of competence conferred by the legislator on the higher judicial authorities of the Republic of Latvia.

The participants will talk over the ways of applying secondary EU legislation in the Constitutional Court. The discussion is particularly aimed at defining the possible boundaries of the Constitutional Court’s competence in evaluating the compliance of national-level legal provisions with the secondary legislation of the European Union, including directives and regulations.

Finally, the participants in the webinar will discuss several possible approaches, considering the specificity of the Constitutional Court’s jurisdiction as well as the distribution of competences between the Constitutional Court and the Supreme Court. Representatives of the CJEU, too, will give their point of view in the discussion.

The webinar will be opened by the President of the Constitutional Court Sanita Osipova and the President of the CJEU Koen Lenaerts.
