Until the new President of the Constitutional Court is elected, the President’s duties of office will be performed by Vice-president Sanita Osipova

2 October was the last day of work at the Constitutional Court for President Ineta Ziemele. From now on until the new President of the Constitutional Court is elected, the President’s duties of office will be performed by Vice-president Sanita Osipova.

Pursuant to the Constitutional Court Law, if necessary, the Vice-president substitutes the President and performs his or her duties of office. The Rules of Procedure of the Constitutional Court provide that within three days after the President has stepped down the Vice-president issues an order, determining the place and time of the court hearing to elect the new President.

The Council of the European Union by its decision of 2 September No. (EU) 2020/1251 appointed Ineta Ziemele into the office of a Judge of the Court of Justice of the European Union (hereafter – CJEU) for the remaining term of mandate of ormer CJEU Judge Egils Levits – until 6 October 2024. Ineta Ziemele will enter office of CJEU Judge after giving the solemn oath on 6 October.
