The Ambassador of the Republic of Italy Sebastiano Fulci visits the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Latvia
On Monday, 3 December, the President of the Constitutional Court Ineta Ziemele met with the Ambassador of the Republic of Italy (hereinafter – Italy) to the Republic of Latvia Sebastiano Fulci. During the meeting, the parties discussed the possibilities for developing a closer cooperation between the Latvian Constitutional Court and the Italian Constitutional Court in the framework of the judicial dialogue.
Ineta Ziemele drew attention to the fact that the initiative regarding bilateral cooperation dates back to May of the current year when several Judges of the Italian Constitutional Court attended the international conference “The Role of Constitutional Courts in the Globalised World of the 21st Century”, organised by the Latvian Constitutional Court in Riga. She underscored that the Constitutional Court considered the judicial dialogue between the European constitutional courts as very important for consolidating the common European legal space. Ineta Ziemele noted that the issue of the fundamental values of the European Union and the constitutional identity of a state was not an issue to be resolved formally within legal proceedings but should be debated in the framework of an active judicial dialogue.
During the conversation, both parties agreed that the link of bilateral cooperation between the constitutional courts should be reinforced and that the talks regarding implementation of the judicial dialogue should be continued in the coming year.
At the conclusion of the meeting, Ineta Ziemele provided an insight to the Ambassador in some communication projects that the Constitutional Court implements to educate school students, drawing the students’ attention to the fundamental values of Latvia as a democratic state governed by the rule of law. The Ambassador highly appreciated these initiatives, as well as the fact that the Constitutional Court saw its role in society beyond adjudication of justice.
