The Constitutional Court visits the Austrian Supreme Court of Justice and the Latvian Embassy in Austria
On Tuesday, 2 July, as part of the official visit of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Latvia to the Constitutional Court of Austria, the Justices visited the Austrian Supreme Court of Justice where they met with the President of the Austrian Supreme Court of Justice Elisabeth Lovrek, Vice- president Eva Marek and Vice-president Matthias Neumayr. During the meeting, both sided discussed the features that characterise the Austrian legal system. The discussion evolved, in particular, on ensuring the right to a fair trial in connection with making judicial processes more effective.

On Wednesday, 3 July, the delegation of the Constitutional Court was welcomed at the Embassy of Latvia in Austria by Veronika Erte, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Latvia to Austria. At the Embassy of Latvia, the President of the Constitutional Court Ineta Ziemele gave the presentation “The Rule of Law in Latvia and in Europe”. In her presentation, the President compared and contrasted the case law of the Constitutional Court with the recent judicature of the Court of Justice of the European Union. She emphasised that it was impossible to expect that the common European values, the rule of law and independent judicial power, in particular, are not subject to risks, therefore these should be reinforced every day.
Ambassadors and diplomats of the Member States of the European Union, of the Western Balkan and Eastern Partnership States, residing in Vienna, as well as representatives from the Austrian Federal Chancellor’s Bureau and the Federal Ministry of European Affairs, Integration and Foreign Affairs attended the event and participate in the discussions on the rule of law in Latvia and in Europe.

As reported previously, the Justices of the Constitutional Court paid an official visit to Austria from 1 to 3 July, upon the invitation by the Austrian Constitutional Court.
