Adviser to the Constitutional Court attends a seminar on the legal regulation of the European Union on prohibition of discrimination

24.09.2019.

On 19 and 20 September, Uldis Krastiņš, the Adviser to the Constitutional Court, participated in a seminar organised by the Academy of European Law (Europäische Rechtsakademie; hereafter – ERA) in Brussels on the legal regulation of the European Union (hereafter – the EU) on prohibition of discrimination.

ERA seminar was organised for the judges of European courts, prosecutors and other employees of law enforcement institutions. Several presentations were given on the EU regulation on prohibition of discrimination, it was possible to join working groups, resolve practical case studies and discuss the chosen solutions.

Participation in the seminar helped to understand how the national courts of the EU Member States, together with the Court of Justice of the European Union, have developed the legal understanding of the prohibition of discriminations since the courts have played an important role in creating public awareness of the problem of discrimination and in preventing such actions. The issues of equality and prohibition of discrimination are often examined also by the Constitutional Court, the acquired knowledge and the experience sharing with other participants of the seminar will be useful to the Adviser to the Constitutional Court in carrying out his duties in the future.
