The President of the Constitutional Court Aldis Laviņš meets the Judge Ineta Ziemele of the Court of Justice of the European Union

Yesterday, 11 April, Aldis Laviņš, the President of the Constitutional Court, met with Ineta Ziemele, the Judge of the Court of Justice of the European Union, to discuss issues of cooperation within the framework of the judicial dialogue.

The President of the Constitutional Court and the Judge of the Court of Justice of the European Union welcomed the cooperation between the Constitutional Court and the Court of Justice of the European Union, in particular by organising joint seminars and conferences. Judicial dialogue in the European judicial area is essential to ensure that the values of a democratic state governed by the rule of law are safeguarded.

During the meeting, both Parties discussed the bilateral cooperation between the Constitutional Court and the Court of Justice of the European Union and agreed on the need to strengthen this cooperation.

The judicial dialogue increases the mutual use of judicial opinions. The Constitutional Court regularly refers to, applies and uses the rulings of the Court of Justice of the European Union. In order to maintain an active dialogue, the Parties agreed to organise a bilateral visit for the judges of the Constitutional Court and the Court of Justice of the European Union. At the same time, the President of the Constitutional Court supported the proposal of Ineta Ziemele, the Judge of the Court of Justice of the European Union, to organise an exchange visit for judicial staff.

Aldis Laviņš, the President of the Constitutional Court, also informed about the events planned to commemorate the 100th Year anniversary of the Satversme — the Constitution of the Republic of Latvia, and the 25th anniversary of the Constitutional Court. A. Laviņš, the President of the Constitutional Court, particularly highlighted the upcoming international conference of the Constitutional Court “Sustainability as a Constitutional Value: Future Challenges” in September in order to establish an active dialogue with foreign constitutional courts and to participate in strengthening the area of the rule of law in Europe. Ineta Ziemele, the Judge of the Court of Justice of the European Union, responded to the invitation of the Constitutional Court to make a presentation at the conference. During the meeting, the Parties also agreed to continue the interdisciplinary discussion series Conversations on Latvia.
