The Constitutional Court strengthens bilateral co-operation with the Constitutional Court of Austria
From 1 to 3 July, the Justices of the Constitutional Court pay an official visit to the Constitutional Court of Austria. During the meeting, the Justices will share experience and discuss current issues of the constitutional law, among others, will discuss such topics as the constitutional identity and the role of constitutional courts in the European legal space.
During the first working session, the justices will discuss the constitutional identity of both states. Presentations, from the perspective of each state, will be given by the Vice-president of the Latvian Constitutional Court Sanita Osipova and the President of the Austrian Constitutional Court Christoph Grabenwarter. The second working session will focus on the role of constitutional courts in protecting the rule of law and democracy in the European legal space. An insight into this matter will be provided by the President of the Latvian Constitutional Court Ineta Ziemele and the Judge of the Austrian Constitutional Court Andreas Hauer.

It is planned that, during the meeting, the Justices will discuss also matters related to the methodology for assessing the constitutionality of restrictions on human rights, the improvement and development of it, and will also discuss situations, where, in the process of administering justice, a judge has to examine and “weigh” “clashes” between the fundamental rights of two or more persons.
As part of the visit, the delegation of the Constitutional Court will visit also the Austrian Supreme Court of Justice, where the Justices will meet Elisabeth Lovrek, the President of the Austrian Supreme Court of Justice, and the Vice-president Matthias Neumayr. The delegation of the Constitutional Court will be welcomed at the Latvian Embassy in Austria by Veronika Erte, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Latvia to Austria. The parties will discuss current issues of constitutional law in Latvia.
