VIDEO: The solemn hearing on the occasion of opening the Constitutional Court’s judicial year

Today at 10 a.m. (Riga time), the Constitutional Court’s solemn hearing will be held on the occasion of opening the new judicial year.

The solemn hearing will be opened by the Constitutional Court’s President Aldis Laviņš, who will report on the development of the constitutional law in 2022 (simultaneous interpretation into English will be provided).

Following his report, the guest of honour at the solemn hearing – Danutė Jočienė, President of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Lithuania, – will address the participants in English.

The solemn hearing of the Constitutional Court will conclude the previous and open the new judicial year of the Court. The Constitutional Court’s solemn hearing is held with the objective of developing the dialogue between the constitutional bodies, representing the three branches of the state power, aimed at reinforcing the values of a democratic state governed by the rule of law.

At 13.30, a press conference will be held, during which Report on the Work of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Latvia in 2022 will be presented and current trends in the area of constitute law in the Baltic States will be examined. Aldis Laviņš, President of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Latvia, and Danutė Jočienė, President of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Lithuania will speak at the press conference. The working languages at the press conference will be Latvian and English, simultaneous interpretation will be provided.

The tradition of opening the Constitutional Court’s new judicial year at a solemn hearing was launched in January 2019. The Constitutional Court’s solemn hearing is held to look back on the cases, heard by the Constitutional Court during the previous year, and highlight findings, included in the rulings, that are essential for reinforcing democracy and the rule of law in Latvia.
