Justices of the Constitutional Court attend IV Congress of the World Conference on Constitutional Justice in Vilnius

From 11 September to 14 September the President of the Constitutional Court Ineta Ziemele, Justices of the Constitutional Court Gunārs Kusiņš and Aldis Laviņš, as well as the Advisor to the President of the Constitutional Court Laila Jurcēna will attend the IV Congress of the World Conference on Constitutional Justice (hereinafter – the Conference) in Vilnius, Lithuania. An official meeting with Einars Semanis, the Ambassador of Latvia to Lithuania, is also planned during the Congress.

The theme chosen for the Congress of this year is “The Rule of Law and Constitutional Justice in the Modern World”. The participants of the Congress will discuss this topic, examining it from different perspectives. Different views held by various states on the concept and content of the rule of law, as well as predictable challenges to the rule of law and constitutional legal proceedings in near future will be discussed. Participants of the Congress will examine the rule of law from the vantage point of the State, laws, and of a person; moreover, a number of issues related to independence of constitutional courts will be discussed at the Congress.

In the framework of the topic of the Congress, each country has prepared its national report, providing answers to various questions related to the topic of the Congress, reflecting the practice existing in the respective country.

The Congress gathers not only representatives of states party to the Conference, but also other invited participants from the European Court of Human Rights, the European Commission for Democracy through Law (the Venice Commission), as well as from other institutions.

On the World Conference on Constitutional Justice

The Conference was established in 2011, and it unites 110 institutions of constitutional justice from Africa, North America, South America, Australia, Asia, and Europe. The World Conference is the conference of the highest level in the field of constitutional justice. It aims to promote constitutional rule of law and judicial dialogue of a global scale, involving judges of constitutional courts, which is a decisive element of democracy, protection of human rights, and the rule of law. The Constitutional Court of the Republic of Latvia has been active in this Conference since 2011.
