Justice of the Constitutional Court Aldis Laviņš visits the Cassation Court of France to share experience

From 20 to 29 May, the Justice of the Constitutional Court Aldis Laviņš visited the Cassation Court of France (Cour de cassation) to share experience. The objective of the visit was to explore the measures for improving the effectiveness of the judicial system of France, which the Cassation Court implements in co-operation with the French Government.

During the visit, Aldis Laviņš discussed with the French colleagues a number of matters related to improving the effectiveness of the judicial system. Aldis Laviņš had the opportunity to explore the role of the Cassation Court within the judicial system of France and the way in which this Court co-operates with lower instance courts. The importance of examining constitutional issues was also focused on in the framework of the visit.

Aldis Laviņš, as part of the experience-sharing visit, met also the representatives of the Council of the State of France (Conseil d’État) and the judges of the Court of Appeal (Cour d’appel) to discuss also with them the relevant issues pertaining to improving the effectiveness of the judicial system.

In the recent years, the Constitutional Court has implemented a number of successful co-operation projects with France, which proves the close partnership of the Latvian Constitutional Court and the French judicial institutions and experts thereof in the area of law. This partnership has been facilitated by the Cabinet Order of 4 April 2018 No. 145 “On Political Declaration on the Strategic Partnership Action Plan of Latvia and France for 2018-2022”, which includes the judicial dialogue between the courts of both countries as one of the directions for promoting cooperation.
