The President of the Constitutional Court Ineta Ziemele visits the Supreme Court of Finland

On Wednesday, 6 February, the President of the Supreme Court Ineta Ziemele visited the Supreme Court of Finland and Latvia’s Embassy in Finland, as well as attended the conference of the judges of Finland’s administrative courts, which was held to mark the day of administrative judges in Finland.

At the Supreme Court of Finland, Ineta Ziemele met with the President of the Supreme Court of Finland Timo Esko and the Justice of the Supreme Court of Finland Päivi Hirvelä. During the meeting, Ineta Ziemele gave an insight to the Justices into the jurisdiction of the Constitutional Court of Latvia, explained its role in the state order of Latvia as a democratic state governed by the rule of law, and also discussed a number of legal issues that are relevant for both countries. The President of the Supreme Court of Finland expressed interest in the Latvian judicial system and admitted that the conversation had provided to him valuable information about Latvia’s judicial system and the functioning of the Latvian Constitutional Court.

During the meeting with Kristīne Našeniece, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Latvia to Finland, and Edgars Bulavs, the Deputy-head of the Latvian Embassy in Finland, Ineta Ziemele discussed the issues on how the embassies of Latvia could provide more meaningful information about the work and role of the Constitutional Court and the functioning of the judicial system in Latvia.

Ineta Ziemele concluded her visit to Finland by attending the conference of Finland’s administrative judges in honour of the day of administrative judges, held at the University of Helsinki. The opening address at the conference was given by the Finnish Minister for Justice Antti Häkkänen, who in his speech highlighted the historical development of Finland’s administrative courts over time, and also drew attention to the future challenges for the Finnish judicial system, caused by the development of modern technologies and climate change.
