Annual Conference of the Latvian and Lithuanian Constitutional Courts Opened

08.06.2017.

Today, on 8 June, Justices of the Constitutional Court are welcoming Justices and representatives of the Lithuanian Constitutional Court. To mark this event, the Constitutional Court is organising a two-day conference “Legality (Lawfulness) Assessment in the Judgements of the Constitutional Court: Principles and the Criteria of Assessment”. The conference will be opened by the President of the Latvian Constitutional Court Ineta Ziemele and the President of the Lithuanian Constitutional Court Dainius Žalimas.

“Bilateral conferences of the Latvian Constitutional Court and the Lithuanian Constitutional Court have become an important tradition. They have been held already since 2000. It is a precious opportunity to meet once a year, to share experience related to issues of constitutional law and to inform about the most important rulings adopted during the previous year and the most relevant findings. We feel satisfied, having so professional and responsive partners of cooperation, who, moreover, are close neighbours. We can learn from each other and use this knowledge in the Court’s work,” says Ineta Ziemele, the President of the Constitutional Court.

Justices of the Latvian Constitutional Court Gunārs Kusiņš and Aldis Laviņš will give presentations during the conference, whereas the Lithuanian Constitutional Court will be represented by the President of the Lithuanian Constitutional Court Dainius Žalimas and Justice Vytas Milius.

It is planned to include these papers in the Conference Proceedings of the Latvian Constitutional Court.
